The early 1990's still looked and sounded a bit like the 80's. Artists like New Kids on the Block, MC Hammer, and Vanilla Ice were popular at the start of the 90's.
Before long, styles began to shift and people listened to messier-sounding grunge bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam.
R.E.M. started out in the 80's but became very famous in the 90's.
No Doubt played high-energy upbeat music called ska. Their singer Gwen Stefani later went on to put out albums on her own.
Green Day was a punk rock band that had a lot of hit songs in the 90's and 2000's.
Some other famous artists of the 90's include Alanis Morissette, Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls, NSYNC, Weezer, Whitney Houston, Smashing Pumpkins, Fugees, TLC, Oasis, Boyz II Men, Mariah Carey, Sheryl Crow, and Celine Dion.
And of course many of the artists we've heard from the 70's and 80's kept making music through the 90's too, like Madonna, Tom Petty, Elton John, Neil Young, and others.
